Mary Was A Good Mom

May 08, 2022 | Paul Duppenthaler

Mary was a good mom. She set the bar high for all moms ever since. Today's message isn't a 9 point lesson about how to be a better mom, though. It's a word from the Lord to turn to Him to be filled with love so that we can honor all moms (especially our own) even when they fail to live up to Mary's wonderful example. Secondarily, moms might be inspired by her example as well.

Mary Was A Good Mom

Exodus 20:12

  1. Moms   and   much for their children.

Luke 2:4-7 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

  1. Moms   and   for their children in their hearts.

Luke 2:19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.

Luke 2:33 The child's father and mother marveled at what was said about him.

Luke 2:51 But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.

  1. Moms work hard to   their children.

Luke 2:22-23, 39-41 When the time of their purification according to the Law of Moses had been completed, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, "Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord.") When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth. And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him. Every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover.

  1. Moms are often hurt by  .

Luke 2:46-51 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them, and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you." "Why were you searching for me?" he asked. "Didn't you know I had to be in my Father's house?" But they did not understand what he was saying to them.

  1. Moms have   about their children.

John 2:1-5 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no more wine." "Dear woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied. "My time has not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."

  1. Moms spend   with their kids.

John 2:12 After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples.
There they stayed for a few days.

  1. Moms gracefully at the right time.

Luke 8:19-21 Now Jesus' mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. Someone told him, "Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you." He replied, "My mother and brothers are those who hear God's word and put it into practice."

  1. Moms suffer severe .

John 19:25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother...

  1. Moms keep on  .

Acts 1:14 They all joined together constantly in prayer,
along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

Knowing these things, what keeps you fully from honoring your mother? And all mothers?

  1. Unaware… I have never really appreciated the love and work of my mom.
  2. Unwilling… I have a froward heart towards my mom. I hold unforgiveness.

To grow in your ability and desire to honor your parents, turn to Jesus.

  1. He commands it… not based on knowledge, love or merit.
  2. He modelled it… He always honored His mother…even on the Cross.
  3. He indwells us… pray for a transformed heart that desires and does what Jesus desired and did.

Series Information

The last words of the Apostle Paul included this admonition to the church via Timothy: Preach the Word. This series is a collection of sermons that do just that. As pastor Paul transitions to a new phase of ministry in retirement, these sermons represent the foundational truths he has tried to emphasize over the first 30 years of Countryside's ministry.
