When Broken is Better

Series: The Word

When Broken is Better

April 03, 2022 | Paul Duppenthaler

Normally we associate the word "broken" with bad news... broken bone, broken heart, broken marriage. This is generally true in the Bible as well, except in Psalm 51:17. In this verse a broken spirit and a broken heart are spoken of as stellar attributes. Join us for this important message about why this is true and how we can benefit from having these qualities.

When Broken Is Better

Psalm 51:1-2, 10-12, 17 ESV

1.   NEEDS TO BE REFINED BY FIRE.

1 Peter 1:6-7 In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith – of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire – may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

2.   NEED TO BE DISICIPLINED.

Hebrews 12:10–11 God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

3.   NEED TO BE PRUNED.

John 15:1–2 Jesus said, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.
He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.”

4.   SOMETIMES NEED TO BE REFORMED.

Jeremiah 18:3–6 I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel. But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him. Then the word of the Lord came to me. He said, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the Lord. “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel.

5.  EVEN  NEEDED A THORN IN THE FLESH

2 Cor 12:7-10  In order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

6.  THE LORD  FOR THOSE WITH BROKEN AND CONTRITE HEARTS.

Psalm 34:18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Psalm 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

Series Information

The last words of the Apostle Paul included this admonition to the church via Timothy: Preach the Word. This series is a collection of sermons that do just that. As pastor Paul transitions to a new phase of ministry in retirement, these sermons represent the foundational truths he has tried to emphasize over the first 30 years of Countryside's ministry.
