God's Grace Is More

October 31, 2021 | Paul Duppenthaler

The Christian concept of God speaking to us in "a still small voice" comes from today's passage in 1 Kings 19. The meaning in the original Hebrew is debatable. It could mean "sheer silence" or even "a thunderous roar" (rare!) God spoke to Elijah in the way that Elijah really needed to hear... in this case, he didn't need anything flashy. And in any case, 1 Kings 19 is more about God's grace to someone who is burned out than how we should listen for God's voice. Join us for today's message.

God’s Grace Is More

1 Kings 19 NIV

  1. HAVE YOU EVER PRAYED, “I HAVE HAD ENOUGH, LORD”?

1 Kings 19:4b-5a “I have had enough, Lord,” he (Elijah) said. “Take my life;
I am no better than my ancestors.” Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep.

  1. WHEN YOU’VE HAD ENOUGH,  IS EVEN MORE.

1 Kings 19:7-8  The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.

  1. THE LORD ASKS: ?

1 Kings 19:10 He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty.
The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets
to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”

  1. GOD SPEAKS IN THE WAY WE MOST .

1 Kings 19:11-13a The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.

  1.  AND  FOR SERVICE

1 Kings 19:15a,18  The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came... 18 Yet I reserve 7000
in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.”

GOD’S VOICE FOR TODAY: ESPECIALLY HEARD .

Heb 1:1–2 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times
and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son…

GOD’S PROMISE FOR TODAY:.

Matthew 11:28–30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

GOD’S WORD IS FOR  DAY.

Apart from His Spirit working through Scripture, God does not promise to use
any other means to guide us, nor should we expect Him to.
—Phillip D. Jensen

1 Corinthians 15:58 Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm.
Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord,
because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
