King Uzziah: 2 Chronicles 26

Pastor Jon Knapp

July 28th, 2024

But after Uzziah became powerful, his pride led to his downfall.

                                                                      2 Chronicles 26:16a

  1. Power can lead to pride which leads to a downfall.

A. When we think our power is intrinsic, we are   -

You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.”  But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today. Deuteronomy 8:17-18

B. Power can change us and lead to our  .

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.  Proverbs 16:18

C. God  the prideful.

But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:

“God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”  James 4:6

  1. How we follow Jesus in our relationship to power.

A. Build your life on  not human power.

His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 2 Peter 1:3

B.  is the pathway to divine power.

“Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.     2 Corinthian 12:7-10

C. Lay aside human power to  others.

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. Philippians 2:5-7

Series Information

We belong to a long line of men and women who have faithfully followed God, endured great hardship, and saw their weakness turned to strength in Christ. Hebrews 11-12 reads like a Who's Who of the Bible, sharing small snippets about these faithful people. This summer we have the opportunity to learn more about who they were and how their faith can compel us to fix our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.
