Miracles in the Bible are often very misunderstood. Some take them to be the normal experience of Christians who pray hard enough, sincerely enough, with enough people... and then they are disappointed or angry with God when parallel miracles don't happen to them. Miracles cannot be altogether ruled out for today, but the purpose of miracles in the Bible isn't to show us what we can expect in this life when we trust in Christ. They point to WHY we should be excited to trust in Christ. Miracles in the Bible are often called signs... signs that point to Jesus; to His nature, identity and mission. Matthew 20:29–34 NIV 

  1. MIRACLES REVEALED JESUS’ NATURE:   AND .

Matthew 20:32-34a  Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked. “Lord,” they answered, “we want our sight.” Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes.

Mark 1:41 Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man.

Lamentations 3:22-23  Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 

  1. MIRACLES REVEALED JESUS’ IDENTITY: .

Matthew 20:34b Immediately they received their sight and followed him.

Luke 7:22 Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached.

Acts 2:22 Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. 

  1. MIRACLES REVEALED JESUS’ PURPOSE: .

Titus 2:14 (Jesus) gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness
and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

Heb 9:15a Christ is the mediator of a new covenant,
that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—

John 6:39 This is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me,
but raise them up at the last day.

Jesus is here.  Jesus loves you.  Jesus want to meet your deepest needs.

Romans 8:26–28 The Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.  

 

Series Information

In our continued study of Gospel of Matthew, we see how God’s promises in the Hebrew Scriptures to bring salvation to his people Israel and to the whole world are being fulfilled with the coming of Jesus the Messiah. Our response to this joyful news should be to go into all the world and make disciples of Jesus the Messiah.
